In this three-part story (in the original magazine printing) The TARDIS accidentally (what else is new?) materializes around a people escaping a dying planet, where the peasants have been disappearing and the rains aren’t coming. The Doctor, Peri, and Frobisher investigate and while they don’t learn what happened to the rains, they do find out why the peasants are disappearing. A rather mad scientist found a crashed Cyberman spaceship and decided to create his own and kill off his fellow scientists. Naturally the Doctor wins, but learns that Frobisher is no longer able to shapeshift.
What they got right: The main story presents a fair mystery, plus it’s a different use for the Cybermen
What they got wrong: Apparently McKenzie didn’t want to bother with Frobisher’s shapeshifting for whatever reason, but why ruin it for future writers by giving him “Mono-Morphia”, which robs him of his abilities? And if you’re going to do that, write a story or subplot around that, don’t just stuff it at the end of an unrelated story. Peri and Frobisher didn’t even do anything in the last two chapters.
Recommendation: A decent enough story that’s a least worth picking up.
