This Independence Day there is a movement to read the Declaration of Independence, one of the two most important documents in US history. This declaration set down every grievance by the 13 colonies against King George as well as decreed that they were separating from the British Empire to form their own country. This, and the bloody war that followed, are often forgotten during our “Fourth of July” festivities, somewhere between the hot dogs and fireworks.
For this year’s Independence Day posting, I found this video, a reading of the Declaration by a group of famous celebrities. I believe that what was true then is true today and the full document is something everyone of every country needs to hear, especially if you live in the United States of America. This is our history, people.
Have a happy and safe Independence Day, America. Careful with the fireworks. The above image is a digital version of the “Dunlap Broadside” copy of the Declaration of Independence held at the Yale University Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
