I don’t think this is what it would look like if a Borg and a Cyberman had a baby. I never want to know what it WOULD look like.

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation 2 #2

IDW Publishing (June, 2012)

WRITERS: Scott & David Tipton with Tony Lee
ARTIST (including the selected cover): J.K. Woodward
LETTERER: Shawn Lee
EDITOR: Denton J. Tipton

Flashing back a bit before the end of the previous issue, the Enterprise-D heads for a mining operation with some odd locals, when an investigation turns into a rescue mission. After that settles down, Riker, Dr. Crusher, and Data try out a new Dixon Hill holoprogram for Picard, which is when the Doctor arrives. As the two groups get to know each other they head for Delta IV after receiving a distress signal, but the Borg and Cybermen have beaten them there.

What they got right: This isn’t the Doctor Who and Star Trek universes co-existing but the AU Cybermen somehow ending up in the Trekverse, with the Doctor and friends drawn in. The interaction seems believable, as the Doctor tends to win over the good guys fairly quick. They also add to the mystery when the Doctor is surprised that he knows what a Klingon is. Finally, the TNG crew take center stage in this story but after catching up they continue the story rather than “issue #2; what was the other team doing during issue #1) the entire comic.

What they got wrong: If knowledge of this universe is seeping into his head, why does he not know about Delta IV? Or alternately why does he know what a Klingon is when even he is surprised he knows. And it’s still the painted style I dislike so much, even if it’s better than most comics done this way.

Recommendation: Not a fan of the art (hence no “Best Scene”–this style has to try harder with me) but I’m getting into the story. This could have devolved into fanfic territory, although there are still enough issues left to go to make that happen.
