For anyone paying attention at home, I didn’t forget issue #43. I’m passing it by. It’s an adaptation of The Big Broadcast Of 2006, one of my least favorite episodes of the original series. I don’t know why they went with that or why then needed filler, but I’m so biased against the episode that I don’t know if I could be fair to the comic. Some day I’ll review the episode.
The Transformers #44
Marvel Comics (September, 1988)“The Cosmic Carnival” WRITER: Bob Budiansky PENCILER: Frank Springer INKER: Danny Bulanadi COLORIST: Nel Yomtov LETTERER: Bill Oakley EDITOR: Don Daley
On their way from Nebulos to Earth, the Steelhaven crew are hit with an advertisement for a space carnival, with Sky Lynx as the featured attraction. Optimus and Goldbug go to investigate and find the Spacehikers forced to perform in a sideshow while Sky Lynx works off their debt, which seems to be a scam by Big Top and the sideshow boss, an Earth man named Berko. Optimus convinces Berko to help them all escape the carnival and put Big Top himself into the sideshow cage.
What they got right: While we all want them to get back to Earth, this is a fun little story. It shows what happened to Sky Lynx and the Spacehikers and as filler is relatively harmless.
What they got wrong: Although I would rather seen the reunion with the other Autobots. I was hoping Optimus might read Grimlock the riot act for the junk he pulled, but sadly that never happened.
Recommendation: A decent filler story and this will play into later issues but otherwise nothing spectacular. Hunt down if you’re completing your collection.
