The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon brings nostalgia to people who have never seen the original comic, which is basically the opposite of the cartoon. One of those people would be Mike Matei, one of the not-Angry Video Game Nerd participants of Cinemassacre. The title card artist for the AVGN as well as host of various video game-related shows of his own on the site, he is an amazing artist. To challenge himself, Matei took months to use Mario Paint, a drawing game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, to re-create the original intro to the cartoon. The result is quite amazing.

I chose Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles because it was one of my favorite cartoons from my childhood. If you have any suggestions for other 80s / 90s cartoon intros you think I should do, let me know. Maybe some day I will do another one! Note: This was done with a real Super Nintendo and an SNES mouse. I changed the cable on the SNES to an RGB cable about half way through. You’ll notice on the Splinter shot it gets a little crisper. That’s why.

Special Thanks to James Ronald for doing the amazing TMNT theme song cover!

That’s from the YouTube description. If you want to see the video he mentioned, where he draws one of the frames, of course I’m going to bring it to you.

If you want to suggest something, go to the YouTube page and do it. He won’t see it here.

I like how Mike Matei used Mario Paint to recreate the TMNT cartoon intro. What dedication! Did you ever have Mario Paint? (I can’t remember whether you had the Nintendo or the Super Nintendo game system). Just like how last week was a Droids theme, am I sensing a TMNT theme for this week?

    • No theme this week. The last one was unintended. And I have an NES, so no Mario Paint. Frankly, drawing with a mouse is a chore. That alone makes Matei’s work good, but the fact that he drew a whole lot of frames to pull off that animation is really impressive with a mouse and a bare-bones drawing program.

Yeah, I couldn’t remember which Nintendo system you had. Is yours still operational? Drawing with a mouse does take a long time. That’s why I was quite impressed with Matei’s dedication to his art work.
