Does the artist think the pilot operates the Battloid mode from the head? Why is the “eye” so darn huge?

Robotech: Return To Macross #31

Academy Comics, Ltd. (April, 1996)

“Coming Attractions”

WRITER: Bill Spangler

ARTIST: Dusty Griffin

Salamander is having visions of the Invid coming to Earth. Not trusting his employers he hasn’t told Da Silva or his people. One of those people, Virgil, is currently dating Claudia but Roy is busy getting things ready for Admiral Hayes’s arrival…and making sure stray tour ship doesn’t get accidentally shot down.

What they got right: There is a nice two-page shot of the Invid swarming the SDF-1, part of Salamander’s vision after having been zapped by the ship’s computer a while back. And for the most part it’s pretty good.

What they got wrong: But Claudia is still off-model and I still don’t care about the “leaving your boyfriend for someone who we know is the bad guy he’ll have to rescue her from” cliché. When did Claudia become Olive Oil? Seriously, even the hair style is close to some versions of Olive.

Recommendation: A mostly-interesting story. Worth reading if you’re following the series.

Issue #15 of Titan’s Robotech comic series had the Invid appear on the last page. So it looks like this coming Wednesday, I’ll really get to see what happens when the Invid attack the SDF-1 in Titan’s Robotech #16! Whoever would have thought that the Invid would show up in Robotech: Macross????? Very shocking indeed!
