Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Here we are at the wrap-up. Shorter than usual but (and this should be the last time I bring it up until the next Tom Clancy book…way in the future) after the last book I needed it. The bad guys are gone but what do the good guys do now? And how will the bad guys return? The first two books came out roughly the same time if memory serves, so it’s all set-up for the next book in the series from here. We also have a two page epilogue, so I’m just going to toss this in here.

Chapter 6: Fortress Of The Autobots

and

epilogue: Menace On The Moon

So what happened to all the other Autobots? They seemed to disappear during the battle and everyone acts like only Optimus Prime is here. He decides to use the Mini-Con ship as their base of operations on Earth, remembering partway through to actually ask High Wire, Sureshock, and Grindor for permission. The Autobots in this version cannot understand the Mini-Cons at all, not even knowing they had communications skills when they thought the Mini-Cons were just “smart tools”. This Optimus’ first bit of proof they’re just smaller Transformers, and are free to go home with the kids, who make up an excuse for the new bike, scooter, and skateboard. They also don’t tell Fred and Billy, who also don’t mention they were up there, about all this, determined to keep it a secret. Meanwhile on the moon, Megatron gets to keep his army and finds the other half of the ship, which he plans to also use as their base of operations.

In addition to the revelation that larger Transformers can’t understand the Mini-Con beeping, we also learn that if a Decepticon awakens a Mini-Con that Mini-Con will now serve that Decepticon. This happened in the cartoon as well but it made more sense there. The Mini-Cons of the anime were kind of child-like at first and didn’t seem to have any kind of personality until Cybertron as that version of Jolt could actually speak. In the Dreamwave comics the Mini-Cons could talk like any other Transformer instead of the R2 dial-up internet voices of the show Mini-Cons. Here the Mini-Cons (or at least the Street Action Team) seem to have a decent intelligence rating on their tech specs but still have to serve whichever Transformer awakens them? In the comics they only did so because the Decepticons made them serve them.

The book ends pretty well, setting up the oncoming series much better than our last book. I’ll get more into that in the full book review for this weekend’s Clutter Reports, but this is a book for kids so I don’t see most of you rushing out to get Race For The Mini-Con Robots or any of the other books in the series but frankly I wouldn’t mind reading at least the next book because I didn’t get the answer I really wanted here: does the book actually play up the further nature of the Mini-Cons besides being a power booster? No mention of them as weapons, armor, or other tools. Maybe someday I’ll get my hands on the next book and find out.

However, that does it for this book. It’s time for the next book I plan to review. This will also be the beginning of a series, but one I think they only made two volumes of, or at least that’s all I own. It’s a really old story this time and not in my usual wheelhouse. Hope you don’t mind visiting a forest because you don’t have much time to brush up on your archery skills.

I may have said too much this time.
