When I first started this website I took the occasion of Dr. Martin Luther King Day to post his famous “I Have A Dream” speech. I’ve gotten away from that in recent years as discussions of storytelling took over, though when I caught the day I did try to work the review or commentary around the holiday. However, in light of what happened last year and even though I try to keep this site apolitical so we can all enjoy ourselves and come together through our love of storytelling I feel we NEED to hear this speech.
And when I say “we NEED to hear this speech” I mean with an open mind. You can be open to what others say and still have strong convictions. It’s about understanding what the other person has to say without jumping to an immediate conclusion, and not by listening to what others say they say. Find out for yourself. I suffered through Seduction Of The Innocent with an open mind to try to understand what Fredrick Wertham was saying about comics before dismissing his bad claims, but I tried to at least understand his position right. Some out there can’t take five minutes to hear what another person is saying right next to you. This is not a good thing.
So whether you call yourself liberal, conservative, moderate, libertarian, SJW, or whatever else is out there at the moment, drop your biases and listen to what the man says. You may agree 100%, you may disagree 100%, you may agree on one thing but disagree on another, but LISTEN TO WHAT HE IS ACTUALLY SAYING APART FROM YOUR OWN SOCIOPOLITICAL BIASES before you start throwing quotes around and tossing hashtags onto things on your way to rallies and counter-rallies. Here what he actually is saying because pretty much everyone is getting something wrong on the internet today I promise you. That’s how the internet rolls in the 21st century.
