Person one is involved with person two until person three shows up and changes the whole dynamic. Far too many romance stories use this plot and too few of them do it right…and it gets worse when you realize the relationship is kind of toxic but we’re told it’s romantic. Author James Harrington goes into his problems with this trope and I completely agree, as I note in his comments.
