So there’s the latest trailer for the reboot. I’m not sure why we need a reboot after all these years. While something like the Transformers Universe has been rebooted more that a faulty computer (insert Windows joke here..blahblahblah), Star Trek has been in the same universe through every version. (Although, some fans may disagree when it comes to Enterprise. 🙂 )
Now I’ve been a Trekkie (that’s right, Trekkie!Trekkers are, in my opinion, people who actually worked on the show, and changing the fandom name isn’t going to make you sound more mature, so get over yourselves) for years. I mostly enjoyed the original series, the animated series, and Next Generation. DS9 fell flat for me once the war with the Founders started, Voyager just never grabbed me, except in the comics, and Enterprise just never felt like Star Trek, although it was one of those shows I might have enjoyed as it’s own entity. So I don’t know if a reboot bothers me or not. On the one had, J.J. Abrams can do his own thing and we won’t compare the old actors to the new one as much. On the other hand, Star Trek: New Voyages, now renaming themselves Star Trek:Phase II, and Starship Farragut, two fan-produced series, have shown you can pull off a continuation of the Classic Universe.
Still, what I’m going to be looking for is how well the movie plays to the classic series, as far as homage in their updating. Unlike, say, Battlestar Galactica, which bears little resemblance to the original on the surface, and over altered some of my favorite characters. (Altering Starbuck that much alone is just plain wrong!) Some random thoughts on the trailer, however:
- Is that cop supposed to be a robot or a guy wearing a helmet?
- Why is Kirk giving out his full name? Is his family famous or something?
- Why is the starship being built on the ground? Aren’t they supposed to be built in space?
- Please tell me angry dude isn’t the new Checkov? He kind of reminds me of Bearclaw from the DC Comics, but without being Native American.
- Scotty sounds like a young Billy Connolly. That or a bad David Tennant impersonation.
- New Spock looks the part, but it’s odd to see him that upset–is he going through Pon Farr?
- It would annoy me if this wasn’t a reboot, but since it is I do have to say the new bridge looks cool. However, I will fully understand any complaints the fans will have about it. And you know they will, people. You know they will.
- New transporter effect. Have to see the full sequence, but I have to note it exists.
Until I see more I’ll withhold my judgement, but while I may go see this anyway (GINO was no Godzilla–GINO even stands for Godzilla in Name Only, but it was still a good flick), it’s going to annoy me for being a reboot. It still may start a new franchise and it’s not like the old one is going anywhere right now. There’s still the fan shows for classic Star Trek, I guess, but we’ll have to wait and see. I’m not un-optimistic right about now.
