Someone wants this blog to die before it’s really lived. Last week was Christmas, but I could have picked up my comics over the weekend. However, I caught a cold Christmas day. Now this week the store is closed for New Year’s, today was major snowy, and Friday will be the same way. I have a family event to go to late Saturday, so I’ll either pick up my comics early Saturday, Sunday, or sometime next week. So let’s see what I’ll be reviewing…someday.
From last week:
Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam #3 [DC]
All the fun, none of the New God possession. Sure, Mary’s now a hyperactive little sister instead of Billy’s twin sister, but at least she isn’t evil. Making Theo/Black Adam a kid like Billy could have been a disaster, like so many other regressed age characters. However, and I don’t know if it’s the alternate universe thing or not, it works here. I find myself enjoying the series. And if they’re still doing the whole “Monster Society Code” thing, I’ll be uploading the decoding, if only for Mark Engblom of Comic Coverage. He was the one who got me interested in the series, so I’ve sent him decodings of the first two. Hopefully they only use it for the “preview” section, since I don’t like having to decode the actual story.
Marvel Adventures: Super Heroes #6 [Marvel]
They seem to be shifting gears with this series. The first four were Spider-Man, Hulk, and Iron Man in a buddy picture (and much hilarity ensued), and #5 had Spidey and Doc Strange gently walking through the mystic realms, while punching and magicking stuff. This issue focuses on Ant-Man, but from ComiXology’s description, it sound like the old Uncanny Origins comic, but with better art. I’m also assuming it still takes place in the Adventureverse, while UO was done in the old “Adventures” style (loosely based on the cartoons of the time) but set in the MU proper. Should still be intesting. At least he’ll be sane, unlike what Marvel’s about to do to him.
This week’s comics
Doctor Who:The Forgotten #5 [IDW]
As Tony Lee said when he dropped by the Spotlight’s comments section for the last comic, the 8th and 9th Doctors do indeed get their focus stories. ComiXology already has the preview up, and it looks like Dr. 8 isn’t getting any companions. I was hoping for someone from the audio dramas (I would have loved to have seen Tony take on Lucie Miller) or Destrii, from the last of the 8th’s magazine comics (as seen in “The Flood”). However, Mr. Lee has yet to let me down (except for the lack of oldschool TARDIS inside scenes), so I’ll just assume it will be awesome. Also, I believe we will have Rose, if only to avoid Russel T.’s hit squads.
The Phantom #26 [Moonstone]
I’m not sure if this title will continue when “Ghost Who Walks” starts up, but I hope it does. I do enjoy flashing back to the previous Phantoms (although if Kit and Heloise don’t start aging soon, they’re going to have to play games with the Phantom’s timelines like they do at Marvel), and here we’re getting a tale of the 13th Phantom. Always good period pieces.
Transformers: All Hail Megatron #6 [IDW]
It’s nice to see a writing team who goes after an epic story, and hits all marks, including enjoyment. Sure, it’s been mostly action, but the backstory is beginning to catch up and we’re seeing more and more of the robots personalities. Plus we get to see the humans take matters into their own hands. I’m pleased thus far.
So I guess the question isn’t so much what I’ll review as when I’ll review it. We’ll all find out together Sunday, won’t we?
