I’m a little tired right now, so I don’t really have a fancy opening for this week. I will say, however, that there’s a lot here, so I don’t know that I’m going to get everything on the list. However, here’s the list.
Adventure Comics #0 [DC]:It’s only a dollar. That’s the main reason, since I don’t know if I’ll buy the full series, comic prices being what they are and what they’re becoming. This comic is a reprint of the original Adventure Comics #247, the first appearance of the oft rebooted Legion of Superheroes. Since DC seems to be backsliding back into Silver Age one-notes (just more violent and dark–not sure about gratuitous sex, but these are teenagers, and there are writers who can’t seem to depict teenagers any other way), most people are expecting another reboot, especially with Johns now bringing back Superman’s boyhood adventures as Superboy. I’m not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, removing the Superboy years was one of my complaints about Byrne’s re-imagining/reboot/remake/ridiculous version of Superman. On the other, all these games DC is doing lately just smacks the face of advancement that the characters have had. I expect elderly Johnathan Kent to die someday, and at least he and Martha have had the chance to see their boy grow up and get married. Cat Grant sliding back into her Lois and Clark persona, on the other hand, damages the character.
Mini-Marvels: Secret Invasion Digest [Marvel]: I really couldn’t care about modern Marvel, and Secret Invasion would be one of the reasons why. However, I really enjoy the Mini Marvels. And this will probably make more sense than the actual Secret Invasion anyway. (Goodness knows their Civil War did.) Should be good for a laugh.
Simpsons Super Special #8 [Bongo]:While I’m not a Simpsons fan, I do see the draw, and I used to be. However, until Bongo wises up and gives Radioactive Man back his own comic, Simpsons Super Special is the only way to see him in action. Throw in a Spirit parody, and you’ve got my money.
Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the Eight Grade #3 [DC]: Well, since I’ve enjoyed the other two, this one is a good bet. Yeah, that’s all I’ve got, but if you’ve read the other two, what more do you need?
Tangent: Superman’s Reign Vol 1 [DC]:I’m actually a little apprehensive going into this one. On the one hand, the Tangent comics were a fun concept and I loved Tangent Flash so much, as well as their Joker. For the uninformed, Tangent was a semi-imprint that had the writers and creators taking names from the DCU and spreading them around whereever they felt like it. Kind of like the new Battlestar Galactica without the pretense of resembling the original in any way, shape, or form–and fun. On the other hand, DC doesn’t do “fun” without Johnny DC lurking about, so I’m worried the Tangent heroes and concept are going to be messed up in this story. I didn’t hear about the series until they were a few issues in, so I’m only going by a few scans_daily scans. I still may check it out, but not being a lemming unless it involves Transformers, Doctor Who, or Godzilla (the original, not GINO), I make no promises.
Transformers: All Hail Megatron #7 [IDW]:It’s the big reveal issue. How did Prime get messed up. Why is everyone on Cybertron. How did Megatron get the Matrix? All revealed here. I just hope we get back to the humans at some point. Their reaction to Megatron’s take over is one of the selling points for me, and we’ve been lacking that thus far.
War of the Kings: Darkhawk #1 (of 2) [Marvel]:I loved the original comics, and although I haven’t really kept up with the character, I do hope to see him again. Speaking of back sliding, I do know that for some reason Chris Powell was regressed back to high school and not getting along with his family, but I’m still curious to see if he ever becomes “the Powell”, as his original series indicated. Darkhawk is supposed to become the greatest hero ever, and I want to be there when it happens. He’s got my vote.
So, one wonders what comics I’ll pick up tomorrow and review Sunday. One must wait until Sunday. Or longer, depending on the weather around here and what my wallet will afford. Plus I’ll be announcing a special review run that will take place all next week. I’ve sure hinted enough at it.
