Want to know how behind I am on my RSS feeds? Besides the fact that my three blog political commentary group is almost at 200 postings? I just found out that our heroes at X-Ray Studios, the masters of awesome behind Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures of the Eighth Grade(aka the best comic put out since this blog began if not ever, but I haven’t re-read Fanboy in a while) have announced that they’ll be taking over another favorite Johnny DC title, Batman: The Brave and the Bold. I’ll be rooting for them, but if goes too far from the comic (as other toon-spinoff comics by both of the big two have done in the past, getting too close to the mainline titles), I will call them on it. Still, between X-Ray on B:TBATB and Tony Lee on Doctor Who, I’m a happy guy.
(Now we just need Brad Mick and Adam Patyk back on Transformers, or better yet Bob Budiansky, or even better yet, me–OK, nobody would hire me…yet–and I’ll be even happier.)
As to the best crack this side of World of Warcraft, which I don’t actually play but I’ve heard, Landry is posting early concept designs for the characters in Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures! As of now, there are only six articles up, but you will learn many interesting things about the designs, characters left behind, and more. In fact, I’m not even going to post any of the art…OK, maybe my favorite bits of Lena art.

But the rest you’ll have to check out for yourself. But here are some handy links (which will be updated as they do for fellow late-commers.)
-
The teachers (includes the model for Mr. Mxyzptlk)
-
A character that sadly never made it into the series, you’ll just have to read it for yourselves
-
Streaky and another unused character, this time a rather famous one–although I wonder why they couldn’t use him? Billy Batson was in more than one JDC title just recently, Billy Batson & The Magic of Shazam! and May’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
-
Superman and Zor-El, includes script for an unused scene!
-
Belinda Zee, and you’ll be amazed who she was based on
-
(UPDATE: 7/4/09) Supergirl as Linda Lee.
- (7/5) A look at how the team create the pages.
- (7/6) The first set of art featuring the Girl of Steel herself
- (7/11)Supergirl part 2, plus the “shorts” controversy and the Moon Criminals
- (7/11)The early pitch art for Cosmic Supergirl, and how they (thankfully) got the job!
Note that the dates are when I updated here, and not when Landry updated the site, which you should be reading anyway and bookmarked. Now don’t just click for the larger art. Read the postings! There is a lot of interesting back-story into the origins and designs of the characters. Also that Eric did every panel on the same size of paper someone like me would do a whole page on (shades of my comic making days–actually, I used to fold them in half and get four pages out of them, then moved to using a full notebook). Go show them love already! Convince DC to do another Cosmic Supergirl series (including that Moon Supergirl special I want so bad), this time an ongoing one, when you’re at San Diego Comic-Con this month, and support their efforts at Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Keep making the awesome, X-Rays. (X-Rayers? X-Ray members? I wonder what they go by?)
We still miss you, Cosmic Supergirl. But congratulations to Landry and Eric for landing toon Batman.
