Something light for my return from vacation. I’m not a big Indiana Jones fan, but CineMassacre and Spike TV commentator James Rolfe (known to the internet as the Angry Video Game Nerd) listed the top 10 “yeah, right” moments from the four movies, gives us some of the back story of the concept, and makes an interesting commentary on today’s audience and writers. (Warning: Contains a few curse words and scenes of faces melting off)
Vodpod videos no longer available.
Pay special attention to the closing comments. It’s true through multiple media formats. Escapist entertainment is on the decline, with “everyone” calling for more “realism”. The only place where fun can be had nowadays is in so-called kids shows. That’s why I watch more Power Rangers than I do Heroes and why I have such a short list of comics compared to other folks. I live in the real world, and I don’t need it bleeding into my fiction. I watch stuff with huge space battles and guys punching each other while flying around and wearing spandex/foam rubber outfits. I think realism was left on the curb in another country and stuffed down a localized wormhole.
Just make me believe it your world, if only during the watching/reading/listening (I don’t discuss audio dramas and music enough). There are limits now in that we know a bit more about science and legal matters than we did in ye old days (unless you write for a soap opera), but if I can make you believe for just a moment that it works, and you aren’t too nitpicky about it until afterward, then part of my job has been done successfully.
For another perspective, check out this podcast (and the comments section, including rambling from yours truly) from Sugary Serials‘, “Saturday Supercast” about the various versions of G.I. Joe, from cartoons to the new live-action movie. (Speaking of good escapist entertainment, check out their comics. I’ll be reviewing one Saturday.)
