So I really need something here, but I’m still hanging with Christmastime. So what do I show off for my readers? What would people really like to see? Santa Claus Conquers the Martians or the Nostalgia Critic’s (admittedly curse-laden) lambasting of The Star Wars Holiday Special?

We’ll bring Christmas to Mars next year. Maybe.

Here is the review!

A few things to note:

  • This special is the first appearance of Chewbacca’s home planet. The name Kashyyyk is official as the planet’s name in official canon (and I think some of the characters are used in the “expanded universe” novels and comics) although, as the Critic said, the special itself is otherwise ignored (and most of the novels and comics aren’t considered canon by Lucasfilm).
  • I’ve heard reports that Mark Hamil was wearing a lot of makeup to hide scars from a car accident, but I’ve also heard that such reports are false rumors so I can’t say which is accurate.
  • Nelvana, the animation studio that produced the animated segment, improved their humans drastically when they produced the Droids and Ewoks cartoons. However, they kept the character models for R2D2 and C-3PO.
  • There are other factoids at the Star Wars Wiki, Wookiepedia. (I linked to the proper article in the opening paragraph.) One of those is “In later drafts of the Holiday Special’s script, the show’s producers, Ken and Mitzie Welch intervened, and rewrote much of what Lucas had intended the script to be. The story remained, but the content was vastly different than what Lucas explained. After five drafts of the script, and many additions, subtractions, and changes to Lucas’s original vision for the film, the script was completed sometime in October of 1978.” Imagine if THEY had written the prequels? See, it could have been worse! Barely.
  • I’ve actually found the special online, and yes, it is as bad as the Critic states. I like the animated segment because I like the Droids cartoon, and it’s interesting to see the origins, even if Boba Fett (whose character hadn’t been put together at the time) is different than the movie version.
  • Who doesn’t like pancakes?
  • Since their “Santa Christ” has a rocket ship, I wonder if the Walker Brothers (there’s a video game for you) ever heard the tale of Captain Santa Claus and his Reindeer Space Patrol? (Because it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who has heard that song.)

Why hasn’t anyone remade that? Someday I’m going to catch a request show on the radio during Christmastime, and I’m totally going to request that song!

Tomorrow it’s back to normal with comic reviews. Hope you all had a Happy Life Day Merry Christmas.
