The Phantom: Generations #8
Moonstone Entertainment (2010)
WRITER: Mike Bullock
ARTIST: Zeu
COLORIST: Renato Guerra
COVER ART: Ruben Procopio & Doug Klauba
EDITORS: Mike Bullock & Ed Rhoades (I’m assuming that with Bullock on writing duty, Rhoades did most of the editing this issue.)
A set of headless bodies are found on the beach, the Phantom skull drawn in the sand where the head would be. Evidence points to a pirate foe of the seventh Phantom, sending #8 in pursuit. However, the suspect has passed on, leaving his deranged son in his place.
What they got right: Bullock shows that he knows how to tell an old Phantom story as well as he does the current Ghost Who Walks. What I like best, however, is the fact that his story was actually written in the form of the Chronicles, which is how a prose “comic” SHOULD be done, and was done for only the first few issues. The art is some of the best of this mini.
What they got wrong: The only problem is that the lettering looks typeset rather than handwritten, like the few issues done as Chronicles entries.
Recommendation: One of the best of the Generations series, and worth picking up even without being a “here’s how this became part of the legend” story.
Tomorrow’s Comic: The Phantom: Generations #9. Because I got them both at the same time.
