The Phantom: Generations #9

Moonstone (2010)

WRITERS: Mike Baron & Mike Bullock

ARTIST: Alex Saviuk

COLORIST: Patrick J. Williams

COVER ARTISTS: Ruben Procopio & Doug Klauba

EDITORS: Mike Bullock & Ed Rhoades

The Ninth Phantom comes upon a village burnt to the ground and a survivor, the chief’s son. The boy swears revenge on the Arab slavers who is responsible, having enslaved or killed the rest of his village. Convincing him to stay behind, the Phantom goes after the slavers and frees the villagers, but is almost taken out by the slavers’ leader until he is saved himself–by the chief’s son, who didn’t obey the Ghost Who Walks. (You got lucky, kid.)

What they got right: The two Mikes put together a very good story, and it kept me interested the whole way through. The art is again some of the best for the series.

What they got wrong: The cover artists aren’t even trying to match the story in the comic anymore, as, though cool, it has nothing to do with the illustrated pose within. Also, we’re back to third person perspective within the story instead of the Phantom Chronicles.

Recommendation: Still worth a read, but I wish they’d fix some of the flaws.
