"Hurry, Super Hero Squad is on!"

Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers Unleashed #1

Marvel Comics (May 2010)

WRITER: Chris Eliopoulos

ARTIST: Ig Guara

COLORISTS: Chris Sotomayor & J. Roberts

ALTERNATE COVER (not shown): Roger Langridge & Jean-Francois Beaulieu

LETTERER: Joe Sabino

EDITOR: Nathan Cosby

After Ms. Lion lets a hippo out of the zoo, (sigh) he (seriously, I’m not getting over this) convinces it to go back. He (should be SHE!) and Hairball (I thought it was Furball last arc? I need to check on that) sense something has happened to Frog Thor. The other Pet Avengers arrive, and learn from one of the local frogs that Frog Thor (or Throg) left (see the one-shot last month). Using their mental link, the PAs find Throg in an arctic region, with a giant hand reaching out of a vortex!

What they got right: Not surprisingly, the art is very good, since it’s Guara, and he does a decent job with animal poses and facial expressions. The story is fun, and I like how the Pet Avengers, receiving a mental link from the Infinity Gems last mini, can use that power to keep in touch or find each other, since it’s unlikely that they’re going to have communication devices.

What they got wrong: I will NEVER get over Ms. Lion (a female dog on Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends) being drawn out of the cartoons and turned into a cross-dressing moron! I ask again WHAT WAS THE POINT! At least “he” was useful this story, after being a moron.

Recommendation: Outside of Ms. Lion, all the characters are well done and put into a fun story. I do with they’d dropped “Lockjaw” from the title so it wasn’t so long, but keep an eye out for it.

Kind of be my reaction to a sabertooth tiger, too.

Tomorrow’s Comic: Marvel Adventures: Super Heroes #21, the final issue before next month’s re-reboot.
