Batman: The Brave & The Bold #15

DC Comics/Johnny DC (May 2010)

WRITER: Sholly Fisch

PENCILER: Robert Pope

INKER: Scott McRae

LETTERER: Rob Clark Jr.

COLORS: Heroic Age

ASSISTANT (EDITOR?): Harvey Richards

EDITOR: Michael Siglain

The Flash (Wally, not Barry, although Jay has a few cameos) brings Batman back from the past along with supervillain Mad Mod (who Batman defeated with help from Super-Hip and Brother Power, the Geek–I’m serious) just in time to investigate the theft of a very special set of crystals. The Fiddler plans to use them as part of his criminal enterprises. Batman and Wally have a competition to find the criminal first and stop his plans.

What they got right: It’s an endless sea of the good crazy right out of the box. I mean bringing in Super-Hip from the Bob Hope comics? And Brother Power, another character younger readers may not know about. This title really knows how to homage DC’s long history. Then it calms down to be a great Batman/Flash team-up. Pope and McRae do a good job of capturing the art style of the cartoon.

What they got wrong: The science used to defeat both villains in the story don’t make any sense. I mean Silver Age no sense.

Recommendation: But you know what? That’s actually part of the charm of this story. It’s too much fun for Silver Age fans and kids not to read this comic.

And this is one of those occasions when no Best Scene nominee means that every moment was so good that I can’t pick just one.
