While DC has been busy killing kid characters, they have done something good for their kids comics site.

Yes, I get the humor in looking at a DC site with a Marvel character skin on Firefox.

They gave it to someone else.

Before, the DC kids site was rather boring to look at.

Now it’s in the hands of the guys designing the Kids WB! network of sites, and done in the style of the DC Beyond site. Actually, most of the links are to DC Beyond sites, like the videos (including full episodes of DC cartoons) and games. On the other hand, you can actually download Johnny DC titles. So now you have no reason not to read THIS!

Seriously, you need to read this, although it was the second issue that won me over. There are other titles as well. The only disappointments are the lack of the new Johnny DC (the mascot for the DC kids titles, hence the “Johnny DC” name for the kids comics line) showing up on the page and that the other Kids WB sites don’t link to it outside of a few ads. Still, it’s an improvement, so I can support it.

Funny thing, I wrote the second issue first. At one point I was considering just leaping in without any proper setup. It wouldn’t have worked very well. Dan Didio correctly suggested a more introductory issue.

Wait, Didio did something right? Why he can’t he do that with the main titles? I…and it pains my fingers to type this…have to agree with him, since this was the introduction of a relatively new Supergirl in the multiverse (even if she was based on the original), and it does set up the rest of the series. Billy Batson had the luxury of continuing off of Jeff Smith’s mini (which I still have yet to read because the trade hasn’t come out and the floppies I felt were too expensive), so Mike Kunkel was able to jump in from there.

Yeah, he was certainly right. To be fair, when I wrote the second issue intending it as the first, I was under the misconception that DC wanted a “leap in feet first” approach.

And lets be fair to Dan as well. He was also responsible for the series getting off the ground. The guy takes alot of heat from the internet, but he deserves more praise than he receives.

And yet he hasn’t lit an ongoing. 🙂 I will give him credit where it’s due. Although I dismissed his contribution on Billy Batson because of personal bias, I did give him credit for a decent Aquaman story in the 08 Holiday (:P) Special. I just have a lot of issues with a number of the decisions he’s either made or greenlit, especially when it comes to Hal Jordan and Barry Allen vs. Kyle and Wally. Allowing Lian’s death in Cry for Justice is the one that turned me off to the DC Universe (not easy for me). So even if he deserves more credit, he does also deserves a lot of the scorn he’s getting.
