Batman Beyond #1
DC Comics (August 2010)
WRITER: Adam Beechen PENCILER: Ryan Benjamin INKER: John Stansci COLORIST: David Baron LETTERER: Travis Lantham ASSISTANT EDITOR: Harvey Richards EDITOR: Michael Siglain COVER: Dustin Nguyen VARIANT COVER: J. H. Williams III
After taking down Spellbinder, Batman and his predecessor investigate the murder of former Bat-Foe Signalman. This leads to foiling another attack on Jervich Tetsch, the Mad Hatter. Although the attacker escapes, the nurse tells Batman “he told me to ‘hush'”.
What they got right: To be honest, I came into this with trepidation. I was worried that they’d mess up Terry by making it closer to the usual DC style rather than the style of the cartoon. While not perfect, it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. The art is decent.
What they got wrong: It’s more of a concern, really. Are we really going to bring Hush into the Batman Beyond Universe (or portion of the DCAU)? I don’t think he’s needed. Also, outside of Spellbinder’s appearance, it looks like it’s going to be a rehash of the Mr. Freeze, Bane, and Joker appearances in the TV series. Why not wrap the story around Terry’s enemies instead of Bruce’s?
Recommendation: I’m still not without my misgivings, but overall it wasn’t a bad comic. A tentative recommendation to fans of the TV series, but I’ll need to see more before I can give a final judgement.
Yeah, I didn’t have a good caption joke to go with this. Blame how late it was when I wrote this.
