The 13th Phantom and his wife, Jeanette, are on second honeymoon in New Orleans. On a riverboat they help Jim Bowie in dealing with a group of crooked gamblers to help a young newlywed finance his and his wife dream home. Then the trio deal with the “Left Hand of the Devil”, a former shipmate of Jeanette’s pirate brother.
What they got right: Finally, a story written in the style of the Phantom Chronicles. (Not the Moonstone novels, the legendary books chronicling the history of the Walker* legacy.) I liked this about the early issues and have been disappointed that they haven’t done this lately. The story itself is one of the better stories of the line, and Weinberg really paints the picture of the scene in my head. When he can’t, Bennett does with his superb artwork.
(*for the Ghost Who Walks)
What they got wrong: If his writing was legible enough, I would have liked to have see the story done in “Kit’s” handwriting, but it’s a minor nitpick.
Recommendation: One of the best of this miniseries, and well worth tracking down.
