I have the behind the scenes of why the colors seem off, but this is the kick-off to returning to what passes for normalcy. The conventions are all done (at least until New York Comic-Con) and hopefully we’re back to regular Jake & Leon comics, and maybe a few more articles in next week’s Weekly Wrap-Up. It kind of depends on my rather random work schedule, but it pays the bills and sadly the Spotlight doesn’t. Priority and all.
Also of note is that I’m working to put a dedicated Jake & Leon page up on the site (finally) so that if you don’t want to scroll through “This Week’s Reviews” or “Weekly Wrap-Ups” (all J&L comics are also accessible through the Category list in the sidebar) and for some reason wanted to see all the comics, it would be easy to do. Plus I have a couple other projects, one of which is also Spotlight-related. You’ll learn more in the coming months, but right now here are the few articles I had time to check out this week.
comics
- IDW announces a new Star Trek comic featuring the final days of Khan.
- Snell of Slay Monstrobot continues to find proof that DC comics is preparing for losing all rights to Superman. This time it’s the number of Batman books compared to Superman books.
- He also makes a good case for thought balloons over stylized caption boxes.
- Speaking of Batman, it looks like Frank Miller is finally ready to put out his long-awaited “Holy Terror” miniseries, but without Batman!
- And in yet more Dark Knight surprises, Chris “Batmanologist” Sims found a Batman book he hates. With Kevin Smith as writer (not so surprising).
television/movies
- Here’s one that got lost in the convention coverage. Bill Murry discusses his mistake in voicing Garfield for the comic strip feline’s movie series. It should be noted that with the thought that Murry was responsible for Dave Coulier replacing Lorenzo Music as the voice of Murry’s Ghostbusters character, Dr. Peter Venkman (even to the point of older episodes being re-recorded with Coulier), having Murry voice Garfield, one of Music’s more beloved voice actor roles, ticked off more than a few animation fans when the first movie came out.
- They’re giving Stan Lee another show. This time he’s going in search of people with almost superhuman abilities. The good news is this won’t be another Stripperella. 🙂
- Two commentaries from Big Hollywood got my attention. One is about how Oliver Stone seems at war with the US, using comments he made about Superman and his Jewish creators.
- The other is how reality TV is affecting who we consider television stars. It all comes down to money.
video games
- Only found one this week. Apparently they’re making a pro-abstinence game for preteen girls who don’t think they’re ready for sex despite pressure from dates and boyfriends. I approve. If you’re not ready, DON’T DO IT. Whatever your view on abstinence, can we at least agree on that?
in other news
- This Week’s Cracked is all I have for you as we look at History’s 6 Greatest Examples of Financial Fail. Rather than spending money you probably shouldn’t have getting a hotel at a 6-day convention an hour away because I didn’t know I’d get a bunch of bills and my car taxes all at the same bloody time…OK, let me try again. Whether your a boxer, and actor, and actress, a big-time rap star, an author, or even a President (insert Bush/Obama joke here), spending like no tomorrow will come back to bite you when you learn that in fact there IS a tomorrow and the sun may not actually be coming up for you.
Best Scene of This Week’s Reviews
Muppet Snow White #2

I think this one was a personal bias issue. (Then again, so would Darkwing Duck had it won.) I miss narration in comics for just this reason. And that’s this week. The calendar and the month have changed, and it’s back to business as usual here in the Spotlight. (Although I still have all that cosplay footage to edit together.)
