Batman Beyond #2
DC Comics (September 2010)
WRITER: Adam Beechen PENCILER: Ryan Benjamin INKER: John Stanisci COLORIST: David Baron LETTERER: Travis Lanham ASSISTANT EDITOR: Harvey Richards EDITOR: Michael Siglain COVER: Dustin Nguyen
The news is abuzz with the possible return of Hush, but Bruce isn’t quite convinced yet, especially since he thought Hush was dead after the last time they fought. The assassin continues to hunt down old Bat-foes, including a reformed Armory, using the methods of other foes. Meanwhile, new Batman tangles with a new Catwoman before dropping in on an aged (but still active) Calendar Man. The meeting is interrupted when the assassin crashes through using the Cavalier’s methods and threatening to kill Batman.
What they got right: The mystery deepens. Beechan does a good job telling this tale, and while there is bloodshed in the story, it’s only what’s needed FOR the story. The art is pretty good, with some disclaimers.
What they got wrong: Terry looks almost nothing like his show counterpart, and even appears to be Asian, which is more accurate for his girlfriend. That brings me to the problem that all we see are Bruce and Terry. Barbara gets a mention, but none of the other cast are even acknowledged. The supporting cast for the show are great characters and to not utilize them or let us see Terry in his “downtime” is something I hope is limited to this mini-series and not the announced ongoing. Also, do we really need a “Catwoman”? (For that matter, does this story?) 10 served that role, but Terry has a steady girlfriend who I would hope will be brought into the loop at some point. (We know she was told by the time Terry proposed to her in the Justice League Unlimited episode.)
Recommendation: Even thought the series is tied more to the old Batman than the current one, it’s not that bad a story. It’s at least worth taking a look at.

He looks like a mannequin, but I love what the artist did with the flight pose.
