As the Free-For-All continues at Spacebooger‘s and the Friday Night Fights, it’s time to see the second of Bumblebee’s big bad battles. We didn’t have to wait long, as issue #2 puts Da Bee back in action. Having been brought to the Witwicky home after last issue’s disappointing showing, he was repaired by garage mechanic and former POW (try to slide THAT timeline to Afghanistan or Iraq!) Irwin “Sparkplug” Witwicky. After repairing Bumblebee, Sparkplug lets us know that he can convert gasoline into Energon because he’s in a Marvel comic and everybody can do anything even remotely connected to their main interest (cars, in his case). Just ask Spider-“I have full knowledge of every science not requiring Reed Richards”-Man.

So naturally the Decepticons want him as well. Thus leads into the second fight as our hero tangles with Megatron! This should be epic!

Round 2 of 12

The Battlefield: The Transformers #2 (November 1984)

The Promoters: Bill Mantlo (plot), Jim Salicrup (script), Frank Springer (penciler), Kim DeMulder (inker), Janice Chiang (letterer), Nel Yomtov (official colorist of the entire original series), Bob Budiansky (editor), and Jim Shooter (editor-in-chief)

So as said, the Decepticons attack.

"And go change into your cartoon model."

Yes, that is Bumblebee. For some reason, Springer and DeMulder totally mis-drew his character model. He looked nothing like the toy and even transformed backwards. Considering his appearances from here on (except for a “computer model” splash page in #16) would use his cartoon model, we would never get to see his toy robot mode in action. Shame, really.

But here it comes. Bumblebee versus Megatron. This should be…

And you think kids are rough with THEIR Transformers.

…shorter than a Mike Tyson fight. Hmm. Well, this isn’t the same Bumblebee we’ll see by the end, and this IS Megatron. Still, I don’t want to end on another Decepticon win, and Spacebooger is hoping for fair fights, so why don’t we bring in Optimus Prime to deal with this!

Although Optimus wouldn't look as good in the best cape in comics.

Let's see your Batman do that, Chris Sims!

Much better. Sadly, Bumblebee would show up in the next issue only long enough to show off his cartoon model, and then circumstances (such as those seen in BW’s very first Friday Night Fight entry) would keep Bumblebee down until issue #10, but he wouldn’t take big part in a fight until issue #11, so be here next week for our handicap tag-team match, although it’s the team that going to be handicapped.
