Transformers: Drift #3
IDW Publishing (October 2010)
WRITER: Shane McCarthy ARTIST: Alex Milne COLORIST: Josh Perez LETTERER: Chris Mowry EDITOR: Denton J. Tipton CONSULTING EDITOR: Andy Schmidt ALTERNATE COVER: Guido GuidiDrift makes a deal with Lockdown and the Slavers…but not really. Instead, he warns the Crystal City Cybertronians about the forthcoming attack. Dai Atlas refuses to go to war on them, but Wing and a group of the Cybertronians come up with a plan that will help Crystal City remain hidden, with Drift joining them for what may be a suicidal last stand.
What they got right: Outside of line by Lockdown that could just be him playing with Deadlock/Drift’s ego, Drift isn’t the ohmygodsocoolandultimate character he has been thus far. There is a sense of the realization that made him defect from the Decepticons, and the side characters are following him because he’s right, not because he’s the writer’s pet character.
What they got wrong: The character models are still lacking. Drift gets a “new look” in this story…that consists of some paint being taken off and losing the Decepticons symbol while gaining his swords. And there are still too many Crystal City Cybertronians that resemble Wing.
Recommendation: A step up for this series, but still not all that exciting. It’s mostly talking, but at least Drift wasn’t a “Gary Stu“, at least in this issue.
