Tron Original Movie Adaptation #1

Marvel Comics (January 2011)

SCRIPT: Peter David
ARTIST: Mirco Pierfederici
LETTERER: Nate Piekos
BOOK DESIGN: Jeff Powell
COVER ART: Greg Land & Justin Ponsor
VARIANT COVER ART: Salvador Larroca & Frank D’Armata
ASSISTANT EDITOR: Charlie Beckerman
EDITOR: Ralph Macchio

It’s the first half of the original movie, as the audience to the world inside the grid, and we’re introduced to the human cast. The comic ends with Flynn being digitized into the computer reality and we see Tron for the first time.

What they got right: Credit to Peter David. He put a lot into this half of the story without me feeling like something important had been taken out. I hope part two is just as lucky, as this is a two-part adaptation. Remembering how the recent Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan adaptation suffered by the number of issues allotted, I’m a little concerned. The art was a decent blend of “artistic” and “sequential” if you understand what I mean. I also like that for Flynn’s backstory we actually get to see the events rather than just Kevin telling us about it, an advantage the adaptation has over the original film.

What they got wrong: For some reason, the story jumps back and forth between Flynn being digitized and the events of the movie. Not only is this out of sequence with the film but kind of distracting. I can kind of seeing this working in maybe a novel adaptation but for a comic it doesn’t work and would have been annoying if the film had gone that route.

Recommendation: If you’re a fan of the movie who would love to see the movie adapted in comic form, this is probably the only chance you have, but it is still a worthy purchase. That is, unless issue #2 proves me wrong.

Up Next: Best Scene of the Week (no nominees here, this is the set-up) in tomorrow’s Weekly Wrap-Up.
