The All New Batman: The Brave & The Bold #1

After helping Batman and Black Canary take down the Joker, Superman asks for Batman’s help solving a series of mysterious thefts within the bottled city of Kandor. Together, the heroes track down the thief despite Batman’s lack of knowledge of Kryptonian society and Superman not having his powers within the city.

What they got right: I love how Batman and Superman work together and it even states why he’s friends with Superman. The fact that they’re so different is WHY they’re friends while with Green Arrow, Batman ends up being in competition. The art is well done, except for a couple of panels and the artists are trying to evoke the DCAU style costume within their own art style. It still works, but I always thought the DCAU costume had too large a hole for the neck, if you understand what that means.

What they got wrong: Why are you doing your first Superman story (he had one cameo in the previous version) without Superman’s powers? What’s the point of that? Plus, it doesn’t really feel like the cartoon. Both the writing style and the art look and feel nothing like the series it’s supposed to be based on and more like an original comic. Not that there would be anything wrong with that, were this not supposed to be based off of the show.

Recommendation: I wouldn’t mind if this was the start of an original property, making “All-New” the “Marvel Adventures” of DC, but while I don’t understand why they’re renumbering the comics and it doesn’t feel like the cartoon, it’s still a fun comic that I can easily recommend.

Wasn't that nice of Superman to give the Joker's tank some ventilation?
