I just wanted to throw together a quick addition to last night’s article based on something Snell over at Slay Monstrobot recently wrote about. It also gives me a chance to play with a new WordPress feature, since it involves a “Tweet” by Marvel editor Tom Brevoort.
I love new features, don’t you? Anyway, Snell’s comment started a motor in my head.
So, JMS was unable to keep up on Superman and Wonder Woman, but he’ll be sending Marvel scripts “this week?” I’m sure DC is very happy about that…
Snell makes a note that The Twelve already halted production as it is taking a long time to come out. It should also be noted that JMS missed an issue in his big “Grounded” storyline, bringing in a guest writer to not miss an issue (at least we got that, ask Snell about Fantastic Four sometime). My point is that this is nothing new.
Sidebar: I find it interesting that the last time JMS dropped from a big name title it was Spider-Man, which was also controversial (and brought us a mystical element to the Spider-Powers, but otherwise he did a good job until the whole Civil War/One More Day nonsense). And now his run on both Superman and Wonder Woman has met with fan scorn while Superman: Earth One is getting quite a bit of praise. This could just be me being cynical, but after Babylon 5, he doesn’t get a lot of scorn outside of the comics fandom, does he?
This brings me to Kevin Smith, another writer who has taken long stretches between stories and brought more than his fair share of controversy along with them. The connection? Both writers also work in Hollywood as writers and producers and seem to prefer the format that gives them the most praise, television and movies. Anyone else find that interesting?
Then again, Joss Weldon seems to know how to balance a comics and television/movie career, so what’s he doing right?

Tronix, you’re forgetting about “Sins Past” a.k.a. the “Retcon Gwen Stacy Into A Slut” storyline when judging JMS’ Spidey run.
Also, Whedon may not be the best yardstick. His Astonishing X-Men run, while great, took astonishingly long to finish. (Then again, he WAS working with Cassaday, who’s not exactly Barry Allen.)

I think we’d all like to forget that. 🙂
My point with Whedon is that I really don’t hear the complaints against him that I do with Smith and JMS. I really haven’t followed either of them that intensely since they work on titles I haven’t been drawn to, but all three work in the same media. So he must be doing something right. How has his Buffy run for Dark Horse been doing?
