Loki appears to be victorious, having the apples and his revenge. Without the Golden Apples’ power, the other gods begin to age rapidly, forcing Power Pack and the Pet Avengers into the battle of Ragnarock as Thor must deal with the Midgard Serpent.
In the backup story, Hercules completes his tales.
What they got right: Seeing Alex wielding the power of Thor was cool. The ending is very satisfactory. This includes the backup stories as Coover sneaks in a little message about myths that appeals to my storytelling perspective.
What they got wrong: While Alex comes away with an important message, the other kids learn nothing about agreeing to steal the Golden Apples, Loki or no Loki. Also, while I’m usually a sucker for a happy ending, wasn’t their grandma supposed to be dieing? Yes, we can guess what the doctor did since we know who he is, but I don’t know…something didn’t completely work for me.
Recommendation: I still haven’t read issue #2 because of Marvel/Diamond’s screw up if you can find all four issues (was this ever released in one of those trade digests?) I say get it. It’s a good story overall.
