Transformers: Rising Storm #1
movie prequel
IDW Publishing (February 2011)
WRITER: John Barber ARTIST: Carlos Magno COLORISTS: Aburtov & Graphikslava LETTERER: Chris Mowry ASSISTANT EDITOR: Carlos Guzman EDITOR: Andy Schmidt
Autobots assisting in rescuing humans are destroyed by a group of Decepticons led by Shockwave. He’s come seeking Starscream, whose latest operation is taken out by NEST. Whatever plan Shockwave has involved downloading “control software”, but the machine they’re using decides to escape and he runs into Bumblebee and Sam.
What they got right: An improvement over the other prequel I reviewed this week. There’s more action, and at least one continuity in comics shows humans and Autobots getting along. Apparently he’s trying to retcon Arcee’s Tales of the Fallen story line to give Chromia and Elita One their own personalities, which I hope factors into Dark of the Moon or it was a waste of time. (Consider how little Arcee and her fellow bikes did in the second film.)
What they got wrong: The art isn’t all that dynamic. I blame it more on the style than the art team. He certainly tries but the there’s too much detail thanks to the Movieverse design and the colors are so dark that it’s boring for me. Earth should have brighter colors than Cybertron but in these two prequels the reverse seems to be true.
Recommendation: Of the two movie prequels, so far this is the superior one, but Barber didn’t excite me with his last foray into the Movieverse (Sector 7) so we’ll have to see if he can build from this issue.
Up Next: A “Tomorrow’s Comic” on Saturday and Best Scene of the Week in the Weekly Wrap-Up on Sunday.
