Transformers: Rising Storm #2
IDW Publishing (March 2011)
WRITER: John Barber ARTIST: Carlos Magno COLORISTS: Aburtov & Graphikslava LETTERER: Chris Mowry ASSISTANT EDITOR: Carlos Guzman EDITOR: Andy Schmidt MAIN COVER (shown): Brian Rood
After a flashback of Shockwave’s arrival on Earth, we cut to Brains telling Sam, Bumblebee, and the arriving Wheelie about his situation and what he knows about his mission. Barricade arrives to claim Brains, and as Bumblebee battles him, Decepticons arrive and Sam calls in reinforcements.
What they got right: Barber does a good job giving the characters personalities. He also adds in that Sam and Mikaela broke up, in reference to Megan Fox leaving the movie franchise to be replaced by a new actress and character in the third movie.
What they got wrong: Shockwave’s arrival story should have started off issue one, not issue two. In collected form I imagine this would artificially break up the time flow, which it still does here since it’s not an in-story flashback but a narrated one. Also, I’d have to double-check, and if you know feel free to correct me, but I thought Barricade was confirmed dead in Reign of Starscream, I know Bumblebee and Barricade are considered arch enemies after the first movie in other media, but the comics version of the Movieverse has him dead to my best recollection.
Recommendation: While I still didn’t like his previous story, Barber has been doing a good job with the current two prequel stories. Recommended for fans of Bay’s Transformers Universe.
Up Next: Another retro review on Saturday and Best Scene of the Week in the Weekly Wrap-Up.
