Another Video Game Proposal

I love creativity, especially when it involved marriage proposals. I once saw someone who used a hack of Super Mario Brothers to propose to his girlfriend, but she wasn’t a gamer. In this case, they both are.

Kotaku.com found out about a man named Owen who wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Tora. Both of them are gamers (although they didn’t know it for a while) and their favorite video game is Borderlands, produced by Gearbox Software. Mixing science-fiction and westerns into a first-person shooter with RPG elements, Borderlands features a smart-alec robot, that became central to Owen’s proposal. See they live near Gearbox’s studios in Texas, so as a fan Owen had the unique opportunity to not only visit the studio, but rope them into helping him secure his other true love…his girlfriend.

That’s cute, if not a bit odd. However, an imaginative proposal only works if she says yes.

The proposal, delivered by Borderlands’ comedy-reliefbot Claptrap in a video developed over a week by Gearbox Software, did not conjure images of bended knees, rose petals and those silhouetted DeBeers ads. It was a little inappropriate. That’s OK. “We’re a little inappropriate,” Tora said.

“I think ‘Wow,’ has replaced 90 percent of my vocabulary,” said Tora, a diehard Borderlands fan like her fiance, Ben. “Every time I try to say something it’s just, ‘Wow.’ ‘Holy crap.’ ‘Wow!’ It blows my mind Ben was not only able to think of this, and he had the courage to try it and ask Gearbox to do it, but they actually responded and were more than willing to help out.

Ben did drop to his knee and present the engagement ring, which Tora accepted, and then the two locked lips as everyone cheered. Fade out, up the music, roll credits.

Wait, hold on a sec.

“He got to go to Gearbox?” Tora said. “I was like, ‘You bastard, I want to go!'”

The couple will visit the studio sometime in the next week. And Gearbox is invited to their wedding in August.

Thumbs up to Gearbox for going through the trouble of making this video. Congratulations to the happy couple. And I’m sure Claptrap will find that special someone someday. We will all fear that day.
