Doctor Who: A Fairytale Life #1
IDW Publishing (April 2011)
WRITER: Matthew Sturges PENCILER: Kelly Yates INKERS: Steve Bird, Brian Shearer, & Rich Ketcham COLORIST: Rachelle Rosenberg LETTERER: Neil Uyetake EDITOR: Denton J. Tipton COVER “A” (shown): Mark Buckingham (artist) and Phil Elliott (colors) COVER “B”: Amy Mebberson
The Doctor takes Amy to a planet where they replicate a fairy tale. However (surprise, surprise) the planet is under a medical quarantine and the people actually live like they’re in a fairytale, complete with something that takes injured children…and the TARDIS!
What they got right: This is a scenario that would work well on the show, and in comic form it works just as well. Kelly Yates, a fill-in artist for Doctor Who: The Forgotten gets his pen on the 11th Doctor and Amy and does his usual good job with both.
What they got wrong: Why no Rory? He’d be a lot of fun in this event.
Recommendation: Off to a good start, I suggest picking this up, especially for Whovians.
I should note, though, that I couldn’t point to one particular scene for a Best Scene nomination. It’s one of those comics that has to be accepted as a whole product, but it does show why I like Matt Smith as the Doctor.
