Doctor Who: A Fairytale Life #4
FINAL ISSUE
IDW Publishing (July, 2011)
WRITER: Matthew Sturges ARTIST: Brian Shearer COLORIST: Rachelle Rosenberg LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Denton J. Tipton COVER “A” (shown): Mark Buckingham (art) & Phil Elliott (colorist) ALTERNATE COVER: Amy Mebberson
The king is revealed as the source of all the events on the former resort planet, believing he’s saving the kids from the “evils” of the universe. Callum fights the false king in order to rescue his daughter as the Doctor and Amy work to stop his plans and cure the plague.
What they got right: Sturges really gets the Doctor and Amy as characters, even down to the way they talk. It’s fun watching them interact, and Amy even gets to be right without making the Doctor look bad. The art, including the designs for the dragon and the Doctor’s steed are well done.
What they got wrong: Ignoring that Dracula is a fictional character, he was based partly on Vlad the Impailer last I heard. And from what I heard, despite a comment by the Doctor, he was very much not a “decent fellow who just doesn’t get along well with the neighbors”. Plus the Doctor’s history (and that of the Time Lords, according to an older episode) shows he doesn’t get along well with vampires.
Recommendation: Sturges could be a good replacement if Tony Lee decides to end his run on the main series. (Which, by the way, is the ONLY reason Lee should be off the title, as he still has the better Doctor Who stories.) I highly recommend this miniseries, or trade if you are so inclined.

Still you, Amy. The Doctor didn't have a sex change (as much as some fans oddly want him to).
