reprint of Power of Shazam #38-41 according to the comic, although that was last issue and the solicits claim it’s issues #44-47 (I’d say go with that one)
DC Comics (October, 2011)
WRITER/ARTIST: Jerry Ordway INKER: Dick Giordano COLORIST: Glenn Whitmore LETTERERS: John Costanza, Albert T. Guzman ASSISTANT EDITOR: Frank Berrios EDITOR: Mike Carlin
I get the feeling from reading this that Power of Shazam! was cancelled in the same manner as Billy Batson & The Magic of Shazam!, pretty much with little warning. Something about especially the last issue feels rushed, in an attempt to tie up loose threads (and maybe DC really wanted to do something with Black/”Mighty” Adam, but not the Captains Marvel). Our heroes are recovering in the hospital after an attack by Chain Lightning stole their magic lighting. Her split personalities have become full beings in the first story, going after Freddy because CL’s alter ego was interested in him or something, it was lost on me for the most part. Billy’s in a coma but gets pulled out by Black Adam, who claims to have changed and that he isn’t the same person as Teth-Amon, which is supposed to be his alter ego…again, no clue what’s going on.
Really, that’s my problem with this book. I can follow current events well enough but I’m a bit murky on the details. It feels like Orday was ending the series but was, as I said, tying up loose ends in the stories. He even does all the art chores in the final issue, #47 according to the solicits but #41 if you follow what the comic says. Plus you have more appearances by other DC heroes (including an obligatory Superman/Captain Marvel fight I could have done without, but the cover lies as to the importance of said fight) and overall I don’t see a lot of love for the Fawcett heroes. It makes me even more concerned as to whether or not the Marvel Family will even get a spot in the new DC Universe, unless they still just really want Black Adam.
Unless your a completest who never picked up the last four issues of this series, I can’t really recommend getting this “spectacular”. I’m not feeling the love here.
