While at the Brass City Comic Convention, I was given a copy of this comic for review. Crime Wave Anthology features three stories, two with FBI agents Damien Chase and Kristen Hunt, and one set in one of Three J’s other titles, The Enforcers.
In the first story, “Above The Law”, the two agents deal with dirty politics when a deputy’s friend is wrongly accused for a stripper’s murder. It’s a good premise, but the story is way too short. It could have benefited from a longer story.
“End Game” finds one of Chase’s old enemies taking over a prison, leading the agent into a deadly game. This is better suited for the short story format and the better story in this issue. Both stories have the same artist, and while not spectacular it’s still good.
The Enforcers tale, “Safe House”, finds the lead characters guarding a federal witness, but the crime boss he’s testifying against sends mercenaries to rub him out. A good story that ends on a cliffhanger (with no evidence of an issue #2, though a miniseries featuring these characters is currently two issues in), but as BW readers know I’m not a fan of the painted art style.
At $5.00 (this being a very small comic company) it is obviously a bit pricey. However, if you want a good crime drama comic (not my usual genre), this is a pretty good one.
