Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #8

Godzilla and Ghidorah do battle. Meanwhile, Woods and Allie stumble across Mechagodzilla.

First, an interesting note: the recap blurb in this issue refers to the evil twin girls as “the evil twins”. Had they capitalized it (“Evil Twins”), we’d be in sync.

What they got right: I was worried about this fight after the lame ending of the Mechagodzilla fight. This fight did not disappoint. Sure, the winner is predetermined by the simple fact that it’s Godzilla, but it was a good fight for the comic. Also, using Woods and Allie for the “relief” moments instead of the heavy-handed satire is the better choice, as they’re at least part of the story.

What they got wrong: Not doing this from the beginning. I’ve been on Powell and Marsh’s case for the aforementioned satire, but when they focused on the monster fights, the actual reactions of people, and the Evil Twins, it was a more interesting story. In the past couple of issues they’ve done just that. Also, Powell’s art on the cover is way superior to the artwork in the comic. It’s an art style that just doesn’t pull off the same impact in the Godzilla/Ghidorah fight compared to the cover or the earlier issues of the series.

Recommendation: It seems an odd point to change writers, but I’m curious to see what Jason Ciaramella is going to bring to the story. (Now it just needs a better artist.) I hope he continues more of what Powell & Marsh did right, and less of what they didn’t, during their run.

Actually, the entire fight would be nominated, but that would be most of the comic.

Oh, and I have to add this moment as an honorable mention.
