Is that robot in the corner trying to rape Kirby?

Kirby: Genesis #3

WRITER: Kurt Busiek
STORY CO-WRITER/ART DIRECTION: Alex Ross
ARTISTS: Jack Herbert & Alex Ross
COLORIST: Vincius Andrade
LETTERER: Simon Bowland
COVER “A” (shown): Alex Ross

CONCEPTS/CHARACTER CREATION: Jack Kirby

Kirby and the Bigfoot, Thunderfoot, end up on Thunderfoot’s island “prison”, a secret island in the South Atlantic. Reunited with his friends, Thunderfoot and Kirby join them on the run from the island’s caretakers. Meanwhile, three groups argue over the right to track down Darius Drumm’s and Roag’s group as they awaken Roag’s master, Lady Lightning, and Swan fights against Drumm’s control. Back on the island, our heroes deal with a blind cult who do the work of the island’s masters.

What they got right: I think Ross and Busiek are doing a good job with Kirby’s concepts. The art by both Ross and Herbert, plus the colors are all well done and draw you into Kirby’s world.

What they got wrong: With one exception. They’re still throwing so many characters at us just to get them in there that Kirby is the only one I care about, and only because we met him and Bobbi in the preview issue. Otherwise, I wouldn’t care about them, either.

Recommendation: This is one you’ll have to judge for yourself. The story is all over the place, but the art and concepts are solid. I just wish they’d finish introducing everyone, because that seems to be the only way we’re going to get the story front and center, which I would think it would be by issue 3.
