I’m not surprised that there are UltraFans who don’t like the US dub of Ultraman Tiga, since some of them don’t seem to like anything in their native language no matter how well it’s done. Heck if the subs are to be believed Ronin Warriors was a word-for-word redub of Samurai Troopers and I bet fans STILL hate it. Personally, I thought the show was awesome, including the theme song (although the original is cool in its own way), and you can’t convince me otherwise.

Tonight’s fight comes from Dark Horse’s translation of the Hong Kong Tiga comic and it too is bloody awesome.

“Marvelous” round 5

The Battlefield: Ultraman Tiga #4 (Jade Dynasty/Dark Horse – November 2003(reprint)) “Garbage In, Garbage Out”

The Promoters: Tony Wong (writer); Ken Siu-Chong, Michelle Lee & Thomas Andrews (adaptation), Sno Cone Studios (letterer); no listing of the art team

So Tiga is fighting a monster that thrives on garbage. Evolution is weird. There’s also a child trapped in a building, because toddlers seem to randomly spawn in buildings during fires and monster attacks. Then you have to go back for their teddy bears.

M78 Daycare isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Tiga gets the monster away from the city the hard way.

Well, hard for the monster, easy for Tiga.

However, the monster can absorb all the surrounding junk (how does it tell junk apart from some guy’s car anyway?) to heal itself and create a shield. To make matters worse, Tiga’s meter is expiring, because Ultrabeings can’t exist in their true form for very long in Earth’s atmosphere.

At least the creature's into recycling.

So with time running out, Tiga shoots into his “sky type” mode to speed past the monster’s defenses…

…and then switches to “power type” mode to deliver a punch Popeye would be envious of.

And so, having disposed of the monster, exit our hero and the hero of at least one little boy.

And that boy grew up to be Apollo Z. Hack.

I love pretty much anything Ultraman, but am I the only one who doesn’t like when Ultraman thinks or speaks? It just seems wrong.

    • In this comic we’re actually hearing Diago’s thought, not Tiga’s. He kind of has Tiga’s powers but is his own person. The only time I know of Ultras actually talking is in the Battle of the Ultra Brothers manga Viz translated or the Harvey/Nemesis version of Towards The Future.
