Sonic The Hedgehog #232
Archie Comics (February, 2012)
INKER: Terry Austin COLORIST: Matt Herms LETTERER: John Workman STORY 1 WRITER: Ian Flynn PENCILER/COVER ART: Ben Bates EDITOR: Paul Kaminski STORY 2 WRITERS: Scott & David Tipton PENCILER: Jamal Peppers
In the main story: The Freedom Fighters return to learn that Naugus has seized control of the kingdom by conning the citizens of New Mobotropolis. Nicole is devastated by Sally’s loss, and Sonic’s attempt to elicit Knuckles’s help only leads to a fight between the two. Meanwhile, Naugus not only heals Bunnie’s crystalization but (without even trying) restores her roboticized limbs. That leads into the back-up story as Antoine helps his wife come to terms with the loss of something she didn’t realize she had become attached to.
What they got right: Time to soak in all that’s happened. We get the sense of loss that our heroes have and Nicole’s reaction, as well as Bunnie’s in the back-up, are very moving.
What they got wrong: And I’m back to hating Ixis and Geoffrey. I’d rather see what’s going on with Eggman, and they way they’re taking over reminds of every joke I make about the Marvel Universe citizens. I don’t like the “people hate heroes” stuff going on in the DC Universe and we’re getting close to it here (and already there with Nicole). While I give the writer credit for trying something interesting with Ixis’ origin, I just want these two gone and never seen again.
Recommendation: I’m not sure what impact this issue has on upcoming stories. It’s worth a read for the Nicole and Bunnie moments, but otherwise not that great.
