Sonic Universe #36
Archie Comics (March, 2012)
WRITER/PENCILER: Tracy Yardley INKER: Jim Amash LETTERER: Jack Morelli COLORIST: Steve Downer COVER: Tracy Yardley & Matt Herms EDITOR: Paul Kaminski
With New Mobotropolis destroyed, The Rogues decide to beat the Battle Bird Armada to the Babylon Garden, with Sonic in pursuit. What they find is an alien spaceship, and learn that the birds are in fact descendants of aliens. Unfortunately, the auto-pilot doesn’t care about the local and destroying the planet is the only way for it to go home. Sonic saves the day and the Rogues escape. Meanwhile, Eggman sets up the next arc.
What they got right: The origins of the birds (and we’ve seen non-sentient birds in this series) is something I would like to see explored in the future. This does open some storytelling potential.
What they got wrong: The previous arc focused on Scourge, this arc focused on the Rogues (and to a lesser extend the Battle Bird Armada), who apparently were so evil that they destroyed the Mobians’ city just to get to the Babylon Gardens, which could easily have been dug into with their permission without destroying the city. (Side note: there’s this one guy who was upset about Nicole not protecting them. Considering the way they’re treating her, should they be surprised?) The next arc will be focused on Snively. Is this series now going to only be about Sonic villains?
Recommendation: While weaker than previous arcs in the series, it’s still worth a read, if only for the potential in the revelations.
Sadly, there wasn’t a point I could really point to as an awesome moment this issue.
