Read through my site’s archives and you’ll find many articles where I morn the loss of Saturday Mornings. (I’ll even put some links at the end of the article. I also have a video project involving Saturday Morning on the back burner.) One ToonZone article I remember commenting on placed much of the blame for Saturday Morning’s demise on the FCC and parents groups, to the point where the networks decided it wasn’t worth the hassle.
I wish I remember who in my Twitter feed posted a link to this old article from 2003 that points to another possible source, a change in culture. Writer Gerald Raiti makes the point that the rise of kids channels like Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. (Again, this is 2003, before Adult Swim and live-action shows.) I do see his point, but I’m not so sure that culture and cable networks bear all of the responsibility. Saturday Mornings on networks offered shows that you couldn’t see otherwise and even now (much less 2003) there are homes that do not have cable/satellite, or the higher-tier channels like Nicktoons or Disney XD. Still, he does make a good case and I can’t say he’s completely wrong. This plus the FCC and parent group interference are to blame, although I think it’s more the outside interference than the audience. However, it’s a fascinating article, so check it out.
