At least not like I usually do. This is the week I usually put up some fillers and pay attention to what’s going on at E3 exclusively. Then the following week I go over the press conferences my opinion of the announcements.
This year is going to be a little different. I’m not going to ignore the Electronic Entertainment Expo, as I thought I would be when they expressed support for SOPA. That’s long gone and they relented so as far as I know the video game media has relented. However, I’m not going to give it the same scrutiny I have in years past and there are a few reasons for this.
#1: DVR space and the pile o’ DVDs
My DVR box is almost full. This has been a problem for a while now, but at this point I have so much stuff to watch that I don’t have the time to focus as much attention as usual on the event. Plus there isn’t enough room to record all the news from G4 like I have. I’ll still have it on and will follow what’s going on. I’ll also check out the press conferences online…at least once I get out of work.
#2: work hours
My paying job has new owners. They not only changed the name (after many decades) but are giving me a lot of work hours. In fact I have a loooooooooooot of work hours this week and I can’t focus on all my projects AND E3 with those hours. Apparently they don’t care if I cover a video game event promoting games I won’t be playing.
#3: no current console
While I’m curious about the Wii U, I don’t own a Wii. I also don’t own an X-Box or Playstation 3. I have my PC, but they make few of the good games for the PC. Most of the news are about the consoles or handheld systems and I don’t have either of them. I also don’t have time to play a lot of these games, especially with the next reason.
#4: most of today’s games don’t interest me
I won’t say none of them do. There are a few, like Fall Of Cybertron, which recently had a PC announcement. But while some of the dance games interest me it’s not worth getting a Kinect and X-Box to play them. If I had the time and money I might get a Wii, but even then there are only a small number of games I would get, since I only have so much time to play. A lot of the games are bloody FPS or third person shooters set in war-torn areas of brown and grey backgrounds where you try to see how bloody you can make the landscape. It’s all dark, “grim & gritty”, and just not my kind of game. There are other kinds of games out there, but not many.
So between the projects, the lack of games I can or want to play and so little time I just don’t have the ability or interest to follow what’s going on. Besides, I do have other things I want to talk about, as there have been some interesting developments over the weekend and when my connection to the net was limited. I should probably talk about some of them. I will keep an ear out and if something really gets my attention I’ll still try to write a commentary on it, but considering how little E3 has excited me recently I have to prioritize and E3 just isn’t my top priority right now. This has nothing to do with any point of view on the event and I’m sure there are plenty of gaming sites for you to know what the big news is on the games you’re interested in most.
