In the first story, after a fight in a diner where Cliff ends up socking Clark Gable (best part of the story), our hero takes Betty to a nice little house where they could retire, but neither wants to give up their dreams ask the other to give up their dreams. It probably wasn’t intended, but it’s a story that makes me wonder why these two are together. It has the best artwork, rivaled only by the pin-up.
The second story is interesting, but I’m not a fan of the art. Butchy the dog ends up getting caught in the rocket pack and Cliff and Betty have to rescue him with some daring stuntwork. They hint that Cliff may be working for the Shadow but Betty really comes off bad here when she gets upset that Cliff is auditioning women for the intended stunt…and shows it with a shotgun! Easily the weakest piece of the issue.
I’m also not a fan of the art style of the third story, but it’s still better than the second one. All I can say here is that the Rocketeer has an impact on the future. Cute little story.
Overall, this issue was OK, but it’s hard to recommend to anyone except fans and you probably already own your copy.
