Sonic Universe #41
Archie Comics (August, 2012)
“SECRET FREEDOM” or “UNSUNG HEROES” part 1, “The Big Guns” The first subtitle is on the cover, but the second is the one used in the book. WRITER: Ian Flynn PENCILER: Tracy Yardley INKER: Jim Amash COLORIST: Steve Downer LETTERER: Jack Morelli ASSISTANT EDITOR: Vincent Lovallo EDITOR: Paul Kaminski
Harvey sends Silver and two other members of the Secret Freedom Fighters, Shard (a version of Metal Sonic who switched out of the evil game) and Larry Linx (who has a “jinx” ability he doesn’t control very well). Their mission: follow Geoffrey St. John and find out what he’s up to. This means getting through a series of traps and trying to catch the wizard in training. Meanwhile, another team is in trouble.
What they got right: I like seeing St. John get derailed. Where this title shines is giving occasional and supporting cast members of the main series a chance to shine. I also like the idea of a secret team working against Naugus.
What they got wrong: I can’t think of anything, outside of not knowing who Shard and Larry are. Maybe a profile page, guys?
Recommendation: Still my favorite of the two Sonic series, and worth reading.
I had trouble picking one moment for “Best Scene”. It’s one of those comic that works as a whole but no individual moment really stands out.
