Our heroes, after pulling a “Fantastic Voyage” routine on Ultra Magnus, finally arrives at where Crystal City has made its new home. The nearby (by galactic standards) authorities aren’t happy their here, comatose patients are coming to life, and Tailgate’s induction ceremony is disrupted by all of this. On the planet they find Crystal City destroyed and learn that it was powered by a Metrotitan (aka a Knight of Cybertron), one of the protectors of Primus and the others…until their betrayal by one of their own. Now the crew needs to set things right by risking their mission.
What they got right: They finally made Ultra Magnus interesting. The gimmick still isn’t funny, but he was at least interesting. I like how they expanded the Primus story beyond the usual Primus/Unicron bit Furman created. They’re actually trying to add something new to the alternate universe. Doing the art like an old comic book in style was a nice touch.
What they got wrong: You know what I don’t pick up a Transformers comic to read? A debate on religion. I really don’t care, and this seems to dominate the story. I was bored, and there were more interesting things going on. For example, the bit with Ultra Mangus infected with some kind of nanobot and various Autobots shrinking down to save him? That’s a story itself. Why toss it aside like that?
Recommendation: It’s hard to recommend this one unless you like a general religion debate. As for me, it just didn’t impress me.
