I may be biased, but I think Tails has the coolest looking ride. Put that in Sonic’s color and it would be perfect.

Sonic Universe #45

Archie Comics (December, 2012)

“Racing For The Stars”
WRITER: Ian Flynn
PENCILER: Tracy Yardley
INKER: Jim Amash
COLORIST: Steve Downer
LETTERER: Jack Morelli
EDITOR: Paul Kaminski

The title takes time off from Sonic’s friends to do an adaptation of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, a racing game featuring other Sega game characters and real world NASCAR racer Danica Patrick. Of course, Eggman is also in this race and Sonic, Tails, and the other racers are more interested in beating him and saving their respective worlds than just racing.

The other cameos by the way are Vyse (Skies of Arcadia), AiAi (Super Monkey Ball) and Beat (Jet Set Radio, not Mega Man). I checked out a few trailers and other appear in the actual game.

What they got right: Sticking to a smaller cast rather than trying to fit every Sonic/Sega character that appears in the game makes it easier to follow the cast. While not set in regular Sonic continuity, the concept of the multiverse in the series allows this to be just another story. It’s also a rare one-shot rather than yet another four-part arc and I don’t think it would serve the story by padding it out past that.

What they got wrong: Danica Patrick (who according to the trailer I saw is in the wrong race car) really doesn’t do anything other than show up. She gets some lines in the beginning and the only other time she does anything is passing Eggman’s racer. Why put her in here and not do anything with her?

Recommendation: A fun little side story that you might like if your into Sonic or just the All-Stars Racing Transformed game. Otherwise, still give it a look-see.

No moments really stood out for me as far as Best Scene nominations, though.
