While Rodimus and Ultra Magnus continue to investigate the assault on Red Alert, the others continue the pre-war tale. Prowl and Chromedome’s investigation merges with Orion Pax’s as they learn events are actually a trap to brainwash members of the burgeoning Decepticon movement. This includes setting off a bomb at a funeral for the last Prime and not knowing who to trust means our trio plus Ratchet and Roller must do something rather desperate to save lives.
What they got right: I usually complain about the goofier aspect of this series but somehow they all work rather well here. Maybe because Prowl here is more likable than how he’s usually depicted in IDW titles. And within all that there’s political intrigue and done well. Plus, while I may not like IDW’s version of pre-war Cybertron, it’s a story we finally get, a rarity in the Transformers franchise.
What they got wrong: Including Roller is a good thing, but I don’t think he’s in line with how Roller should be. Roller is a component of Optimus Prime while here he’s his own being. I like him, but it feels off to me.
Recommendation: It’s still not what I want in a Transformers series, but that ship sailed a long time ago. At the very least it’s a fun story and at least worth a read.

This is how you make a character badass. Just letting him BE badass rather than shoving it down our throats that he is I swear trust me I’m the writer.
