Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #17

IDW Publishing (December, 2012)

STORY: Kevin Eastman & Tom Waltz
SCRIPT: Tom Waltz
ARTIST: Ben Bates
COLORIST: Ronda Pattison
LETTERER: Shawn Lee
EDITOR: Bobby Curnow

Deciding it’s time to finally get some answers, April and the Turtles look towards Chet. As we the readers have learned, though, Chet is actually a shapeshifting robot with the mind of an alien scientist, and his people are calling him home–whether the Turtles like it or not!

What they got right: First I have to heap praise on Ben Bates, the artist for this issue. (IDW likes to rotate artists on their titles.) I’ve been complaining about how Splinter has looked by previous artists but Bates really makes Splinter look good.

What they got “wrong”: I use quotation marks because It’s more an observation that I’m curious to see where they’re going. The Neutrinos that come to “rescue” Honeycutt are the same ones from the cartoon, but their personalities are way different, at least from this appearance. Will Kala become Mikey’s girlfriend in this continuity? What elements of the original Fugitoid storyline will make it into this story? Time will tell.

Recommendation: It’s a good start and I hope it continues to be. Also, I have a benchmark for how Splinter should be drawn in the future. Give the comic a read.

No stand-out moments for Best Scene, but Bates and colorist Ronda Pattison go a great job on the comic.
